Ethereum is a decentralized blockchain platform that enables the creation and execution of smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps). It was proposed by Vitalik Buterin in 2013 and went live in 2015. Unlike Bitcoin, which primarily serves as a digital currency, Ethereum is designed to be a flexible platform for various applications. Its native cryptocurrency, Ether (ETH), is used to pay for transaction fees and computational services. Ethereum's Turing-complete language allows developers to build and deploy complex applications on its network. It has become a key player in the development of decentralized finance (DeFi) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
